The Alevi Islamic Faith in its Outer (zâhirî) and Inner (bâtınî) Dimensions
When we examine the period in Anatolia from the Crusades after 1071 and the Battle of Malazgirt (Manzikert) up to 1512, we see many truths laid bare before our eyes.
Namely: between roughly 700 CE and the end of the 12th century, the children of the Twelve Imams and the community that believed in them and lived the Ehl-i Beyt tasavvuf (the mystical teaching of the Ahl al-Bayt, the Prophet’s family) tried to save themselves from the oppression and massacres they suffered at the hands of the followers of the Sunni-Wahhabi Umayyads by fleeing from Arabia to Egypt, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan and the Anatolian lands known as “Rum Diyarı” (the Land of Rum). The descendants of the Seyyid-i Saadet who fled the Arabian Peninsula, the children of the Prophet’s lineage (Evlad-ı Resul), kept the Ehl-i Beyt tasavvuf alive at a scholarly level in the countries where they settled and gained influence in their surroundings. Since there was no structured system of education, however, it is evident that they were unable to make a great impact.
About the Book
In this work Seyit Derviş Tur discusses the Alevi Islamic faith in its outer (zâhirî) and inner (bâtınî) dimensions. In his own interpretation, the author examines the journey of the lineage of the Ehl-i Beyt (Ahl al-Bayt, the family of the Prophet) and of the Ehl-i Beyt tasavvuf from the Arabian Peninsula to Anatolia, as well as the period between 1071 and 1512.
